I was just starting to plan my MA History of Art dissertation on Dismaland when Cut and Run launched, so I went up to Glasgow that first week to see it, and that show changed the shape of my story. Dismaland was now in the middle, with Banksy versus Bristol Museums at one end and Cut and Run at the other.
Then some other stuff happened, life stuff, got in the way. I got that out of the way, July.
There’s not a lot of art history written about Banksy, and what there is gets hung up on ideas of elitism and populism, which funnily enough is what I have been interested in since I did my first degree, in Fine Art, last century. So I’ve been reading about Italian Situationists, talking to 80s/90s spraycan artists and dusting off my Walter Benjamin, ready for the artworld v me, Isabelle Tracy, MA candidate at the University of York.
I still thought it would be a good idea to find out from some of the people who had been to Dismaland what they thought of it, but by now, the summer was dwindling out, and time a-wastin.
So I banged together this website to carry the QR code to point people to the survey - and got ready for a road trip. A post-social-media way to research Art History, in a world let down by the entertainment industry.
Andiamo!
